Freelance Platform Fees of 20–25%: What Do They Really Mean for Your Dev Budget? 1/4

Freelance Platform Fees of 20–25%: What Do They Really Mean for Your Dev Budget? 1/4

On a $70,000 Project, How Much Does the Developer Actually Take Home?

Have you ever hired a developer through a freelance marketplace? As the client, you clearly paid the full amount — but the developer may have received significantly less. Somewhere in between, a chunk of that money simply disappears.

Today, let's have an honest, straightforward conversation about how freelance platform fee structures actually affect the quality of development work you receive.

Why Did Freelance Platforms Exist in the First Place?

Freelance marketplaces were created for good reason. Clients struggled to find developers they could trust, and developers struggled to find steady work. Platforms stepped in to connect both sides — mediating contract disputes and guaranteeing secure payments.

In the early days, fees were reasonable. Around 5–10%, which most people felt was a fair trade for the convenience. Platforms, developers, and clients were all reasonably satisfied with the arrangement.

What Happens When Fees Climb to 20–25%?

The problem is that as platforms grew, their fees crept steadily upward. Today, many major freelance platforms — both domestic and international — charge fees in the 20–25% range. At first glance, "less than a quarter" might not sound alarming, but the real-world impact tells a different story.

Here's an example.

A client posts a $70,000 project on a platform. The platform takes a **25%** fee — leaving the developer with $52,500.

The client paid $70,000. But only $52,500 actually goes toward building the product. $17,500 vanishes into platform fees.

Add "Upfront, Non-Refundable" Fee Clauses on Top of That

The fee rate isn't the only issue. Some platforms collect the full fee the moment the initial payment is made — regardless of how much work has actually been done. The project has barely started, yet the platform's cut is already locked in.

What's more, some platforms require you to sign clauses stating that fees are non-refundable even if the contract is later cancelled or terminated. No matter what happens between the client and developer, the platform keeps everything it collected upfront.

In the end, the platform is the safest party in the room. The risk falls squarely on the client and the developer. For larger projects especially, make sure you read the fine print before signing anything.

How Does This Feel From the Developer's Side?

Developers don't come out ahead either. They've invested four to six weeks of their time, only to receive far less than the contract amount suggests.

When this happens repeatedly, developers naturally move in one of two directions.

Either way, the client loses. You either pay more, or you get less for the same price.

Why Clients Are the Real Losers Here

Most clients think, "I paid $70,000, so I should get $70,000 worth of work." That's a perfectly reasonable expectation. But that's not what happens.

The developer is working for $52,500. Naturally, they approach it like a $52,500 project — and a gap opens up between what the client expected and what actually gets delivered.

This isn't about blaming the developer. It's a structural problem. The higher the platform's cut, the more that cost shows up as reduced quality in your final product.

So What Can You Do About It?

Freelance platforms aren't inherently bad. They're still useful when you're exploring the market for the first time or need a small, one-off task handled quickly. But for substantial projects — or when you need a long-term development partner — going outside the platform and working directly with a development firm is a very real and worthwhile option.

If you're the one placing the work, ask yourself this question:

"Of everything I'm paying, how much is actually going toward building my product?"

That one question could lead you to a significantly better outcome.
